The BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast is the worst environmental disaster of its kind in our nation's history. I am returning to the region today to review our efforts and meet with families and business owners affected by the catastrophe.

We are working to hold BP accountable for the damage to the lands and the livelihoods of the Gulf Coast, and we are taking strong precautions to make certain a spill like this never happens again.

But our work will not end with this crisis. That's one of the reasons why last week I invited lawmakers from both parties to join me at the White House to discuss what it will take to move forward on legislation to promote a new economy powered by green jobs, combat climate change, and end our dependence on foreign oil.

Today, we consume more than 20 percent of the world's oil, but have less than two percent of the world's oil reserves. Beyond the risks inherent in drilling four miles beneath the surface of the Earth, our dependence on oil means that we will continue to send billions of dollars of our hard-earned wealth to other countries every month -- including many in dangerous and unstable regions.

In other words, our continued dependence on fossil fuels will jeopardize our national security. It will smother our planet. And it will continue to put our economy and our environment at risk. We cannot delay any longer, and that is why I am asking for your help.

The time has come, once and for all, for this nation to fully embrace a new future. That means continuing our unprecedented effort to make everything -- from our homes and businesses to our cars and trucks -- more energy-efficient. It means rolling back billions of dollars of tax breaks to oil companies so we can prioritize investments in clean energy research and development.

Many businesses support this agenda because shifting to clean energy creates opportunities for entrepreneurship. This is how we will reinvent our economy -- and create new companies and new jobs all across the country.

There will be transition costs and a time of adjustment. But if we refuse to heed the warnings from the disaster in the Gulf -- we will have missed our best chance to seize the clean-energy future we know America needs to thrive in the years and decades to come.

The House of Representatives has already passed a comprehensive energy and climate bill, and there is currently a plan in the Senate -- a plan that was developed with ideas from Democrats and Republicans -- that would achieve the same goal. But this is an issue that Washington has long ignored in favor of protecting the status quo.

So I'm asking for your help today to show that the American people are ready for a clean-energy future.

Call From gaza to the citizens of the world to break the siege

Besieged Gaza, Palestine. 5.6.2010

One-and-a-half years after Israeli army perpetrated a massacre upon the
population of Gaza, Apartheid Israel commits another crime against partisans
of Palestine in international waters. The world is moved at the plight of
Palestinians and their supporters. All of the seven crossings between Gaza
and Israel, including the Rafah Crossing—the only access Gaza has to the
external world—remain hermetically sealed.

We request that the citizens of the world oppose this deadly, medieval
blockade. We no longer rely on governments. The failure of the United
Nations and its numerous organizations to condemn such crimes proves their
complicity. Only civil society is able to mobilize to demand the application
of international law and put an end to Israel's impunity. The intervention
of civil society was effective in the late 1980s against the apartheid
regime of South Africa. Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have not
only described Israel’s oppressive and violent control of Palestinians as
Apartheid, they have also joined this call for the world’s civil society to
intervene again.

We, therefore, ask people of conscience and civil society organizations to
put pressure on their governments until Israel is forced to abide by
international law and international humanitarian law. Without the
intervention of the international community which was effective against
apartheid in South Africa, Israel will continue its war crimes and crimes
against humanity, as articulated by the Goldstione report.

We call on civil society organizations worldwide to intensify the
anti-Israel sanctions campaign to compel Israel to end to its aggression.

Ante la noticia de que en fecha próxima han de resolver sobre la “suspensión de funciones” del magistrado D. Baltasar Garzón por razón los procedimientos judiciales incoados contra el mismo por el Tribunal Supremo, como ciudadan@ de un Estado Democrático de derecho y en el ejercicio del derecho de petición, reconocido en el Art. 29 de la Constitución y desarrollado por la L.O. 4/2001, solicito de Vds., con el respeto debido pero también con la máxima energía, que no acuerden dicha suspensión de conformidad con las fundadas razones de la Fiscalía General del Estado. En caso contrario, la decisión causaría un gravísimo perjuicio al principio constitucional de independencia judicial y a los valores democráticos constitucionales.

Leyendo El gobierno de las palabras, de Juan Carlos Monedero, me acabo de encontrar un párrafo redondo, que quiero compartir con vosotros y vosotras:

"Las sociedades occidentales han perdido el norte que le trazó la modernidad: esto es, las recurrentes grandes promesas incumplidas de la modernidad. Se dijo que iba a conquistar la Tierra y la ha devastado; se dijo que iba a conseguir la paz perpetua y ha hecho del mundo un polvorín; se dijo que con la ciencia íbamos a construir la felicidad, y la ciencia, en manos de unos pocos, muestra con demasiada frecuencia sus efectos devastadores; se dijo que íbamos a crear un mundo lleno de sentido y, como al Peter Schlemihl del cuento de von Kleist, como el Matías Pascal de la novela de Pirandello, como el Ingatius Reilley de La conjura de los necios, se nos ha perdido la sombra, se nos ha hurtado la identidad, se nos ha negado la dignidad. El futuro es incierto y el pasado está oscurecido por la idea de progreso. ¿Acaso no son razones suficientes para estar perplejos?. Vale, sí, tenéis razón... No tengo vergüenza. He dejado abandonado al pobre blog, así, sin previo aviso... Pero es que la vida, a veces, te hace explorar nuevos caminos y de vez en cuando, eso supone dejar de visitar los antiguos lugares. NO es que yo defienda eso, porque ya sabéis que raras veces soy capaz de optar (es decir, de renunciar), pero en ocasiones las cosas son así, sin más, y lo importante es que lo que hagamos, lo hagamos para vivir. Aquí el artículo de Manuel Vicent que me ha empujado a escribir esto.
